Retired United Airlines Captain Willie Daniels is adding another prestigious accolade to the walls of his home office, already lined with dozens of photographs, framed recognitions, awards, honors and tributes. On October 17 in Lakewood, Colorado, Daniels will receive the Federal Aviation Administration’s Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, one of the agency’s most prestigious honors.

The award is named in honor of Orville and Wilbur Wright, the American aviation pioneers credited with achieving the world’s first successful powered airplane flight. The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award recognizes pilots whose careers demonstrate professionalism, skill, aviation expertise and a commitment to safety. Recipients must have 50 or more years of civil and military flying experience.

Born in Kansas City and raised in Southern California, Daniels was the 34th African American pilot hired by United Airlines when he joined the carrier in 1987. Over the course of his aviation career, he logged nearly 23,000 flight hours and was based primarily in Denver. Known for his calm, precise approach to flying, Daniels piloted aircraft ranging from the Boeing 727 to the 747 and ultimately the 787, establishing a professional standard admired by colleagues throughout the aviation industry.

The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award is the latest in dozens of awards and honors Daniels has received for his contributions to aviation, education and community service. Among his recognitions are the United Airlines Community Service Award (2006), Pearl of Africa Award for Aviation Science and Education (2013), Community Service Award from the University of Wyoming’s Science and Mathematics Teaching Center (2015) and Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award from Mt. San Antonio College (2017). Daniels was inducted into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame in 2025 and has also been recognized with a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for his commitment to community service.

In 2024, Daniels published his memoir, SHADES OF BLUE: Creating Space in the Future, chronicling his journey from growing up as one of 10 children through his college years at Mt. San Antonio College and Metropolitan State College in Denver and, ultimately, the realization of his dream of becoming a captain with United Airlines.

Daniels’ influence extends far beyond the cockpit. In the 1990s, recognizing both the need for a new generation of aviation professionals and the untapped potential of America’s youth, he co-founded Shades of Blue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to introducing young people—particularly students of color and those from underserved communities—to careers in aviation and aerospace.

Since its inception, thousands of students have participated in Shades of Blue programs, with many going on to pursue aviation-related careers, including 13 pilots now flying for major airlines. Among the organization’s most distinguished alumni is NASA astronaut and Artemis II pilot Victor Glover.

Daniels will receive the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award during the Colorado Aviation Historical Society’s 56th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet. Captain Al Berlinberg and retired Major General John Barry will also receive the award during the ceremony in October.

“At this year’s Colorado Hall of Fame Banquet, we are proud include the presentation of the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award,” Colorado Aviation Historical Society President Steve Kelly said. “Through his leadership in the field of aviation, his commitment to safety and promoting the next generation of aviators and engineers, Captain Willie Daniels has earned this pinnacle award of aviation achievement.”
