SUMMARY:SOFIA Stargazing Education Outreach Event
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by SHADES OF BLUE DC/MD/VA Chapter andScience\, Mathematics\, Aerospace\, Research\, and Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) \nA 747 Jumbo Jet has been reconfigured for the StratosphericObservatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) thatflies above the clouds (41\,000 to 45\,000 ft. altitudes) toview selected targets in the universe. On September 15\,2015\, Nichelle Nichols (Lt./Commander Uhura of the StarshipEnterprise on Star Trek) will be on the SOFIA Stargazingflight that will be flying at 40\,000 ft. altitude\, pointingthe telescope to a star birthing area of the universe\, andanswering questions from students. The flight will go fromCalifornia to the east coast (to Nova Scotia\, Canada) andback to California – an 11-hour flight with in air refueling. \nThe outreach event at the HBOSC Planetarium will be in twoparts: 1) Family Night with science\, aviation\, and Trekkerpresentations to provide background information for the attendeesand 2) the SOFIA flight that leaves California at7:30 pm west coast time and 10:30 pm east coast time. \nStudents are encouraged to send their questions\, for NichelleNichols\, ASAP and include their name\, age\, and location (cityand state). There may also be an astronaut joining us at theHBOSC\, 9601 Greenbelt Rd.\, Lanham\, MD\, 20706. \nFor more information & to send student questions\, contact: \nCharles Acree \nshadesdcmdva@gmail.com\, 301-273-5646

SUMMARY:SOFIA Stargazing Education Outreach Event
DESCRIPTION:The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) Mission has a reconfigured 747 jumbo jet airplane with the most modern of telescopes in the back end of the plane. It will fly at an altitude of 40\,000 ft.\, well above the clouds\, and can stay focused on a celestial target for hours. \nOn September 15\, 2015\, Nichelle Nichols (Lt./Commander Uhura of the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek) will fly on the SOFIA Stargazing flight from California to the east coast (Nova Scotia\, Canada) and back to California. It will be an 11-hour flight\, with refueling in flight. During the flight\, Nichelle Nichols will point the telescope in a star birthing area of the universe and answer questions submitted by students. \nThe DC/MD/VA Chapter of SHADES OF BLUE is co-sponsoring a SOFIA Stargazing Education Outreach Event with science\, aviation\, and Trekker presentations for families preceding the stargazing flight (that starts at 10:30 pm. east coast time). The presentations will be followed by communications between Nichelle Nichols and students during the SOFIA flight. Students are encouraged to submit their questions ahead of time\, with their name\, age\, and location. \nThis event is being co-sponsored with Science\, Mathematics\, Aerospace\, Research\, and Technology (S.M.A.R.T.)\, Inc.\, which has been sponsoring similar Family Night Programs for special astronomical events for many years.
